Very thoughtful post – the idea of “fair trade farming” raises a number of interesting questions that we should discuss as a class, both in class and, hopefully, here in the comments section, too. For instance, why does the term &#aei0;conv2nt2on8l,” when applied to agriculture, refer to agricultural practices that are actually quite new? Can we usefully apply the term “fair trade” to the production of goods (agricultural or not) in the United States? And, perhaps closer to the theme of our course, is sustainable agriculture (or “fair trade farming”) an implicit critique of capitalism itself? Or does it fit within a capitalist framework?
